POWERFUL SELF-TALK COMES NINETY
PERCENT FROM THE HEART
Powerful self-talk comes ninety
percent from the heart and ten percent from the head.
For most people, emotion is the
most powerful component of the language of the mind. There is a
world of difference between saying, “Take this job and shove
it,” compared with saying, “I have decided to quit my job.” The
world of difference comes from the emotional impact of the first
statement compared with the second. The first statement is
packed full of emotion and evokes the image of power and
self-assurance, and the second statement sounds lame.
Make sure your self-talk comes
from your heart rather than just from your head. Don’t waste
your time or do things the hard way by using self-talk that
lacks power.
Usually it’s better to state
self-talk in positive terms rather than negative. You want its
focus to take you in a positive direction rather than a negative
one.
Your self-talk will be more
effective if it’s specific and if it uses all of the sensory
modalities of the language of the mind. If it has strong
auditory, visual, and emotional components, it will have a
greater impact. Powerful self-talk lets you hear the sound of
your dreams while you watch them on the motion picture screen of
your mind, and it lets you feel their motivating power.
Positive self-talk allows you to say your dreams, see your
dreams, and feel your dreams even before they happen.
Read books on how to write
powerful self-talk and take their advice when it’s helpful. But
don’t become enslaved to writing self-talk to a formula that is
supposed to work according to the experts. Sticking to formulas
guarantees your scripting will feel stiff and artificial.
Good self-talk is more like
poetry than prose. It should be music to your ears rather than
a cognitive assessment of where you are and what you need to
do. The most effective self-talk contains powerful thoughts
written into a melody you enjoy singing to yourself all day
long. You repeat it many times each day because it has the ring
of truth and moves you in the direction of your dreams.
