IT TAKES TIME TO GET USED TO YOUR NEW SELF-TALK
When you first start using
positive self-talk, it often feels hollow and false. That’s
because you are talking about things you haven’t yet done. You
are talking about destinations you plan to visit. Self-talk
isn’t about where you are or where you have been, it’s about
where you are going.
People who have climbed Mount
Everest talked to themselves about climbing it for thousands of
hours before they actually did it. Their self-talk started out
as an unreal fantasy that seemed improbable or impossible.
Nevertheless, everyone who has been to the top started out at
the bottom with a tiny thought in their mind. They were
thousands of miles from the summit with the thought, “I believe
I can climb Mount Everest.” At first, the Everest talk was only
a fantasy. Eventually, it became a reality. That’s the way
self-talk works.
You have many mountains to
climb, and it will take thousands of hours of positive self-talk
to arrive at the top. At first, you will feel uncomfortable
talking about all the things you are going to do. Nevertheless,
that is the only way to reach the top. All worthwhile
achievements begin as a thought.
When you stand on the
mountaintop of achievement, your self-talk no longer feels
contrived or artificial. It feels right and has the ring of
truth. You have been climbing Everest in your mind for a long
time. When you actually do it, you are trekking up a familiar
path you have already walked thousands of times before in your
mind.
Self-talk allows you to write
and practice the script that outlines the rest of your life.
When you repeat positive self-talk, you practice the thoughts
and attitudes that take you to the top.
Self-talk is a powerful tool
for reprogramming your mind. It gives you the power to control
the focus of your thoughts. It’s easy to use and pushes your
thoughts from where you are and directs them to where you want
to be.
